Chef Diao is an authentic Chinese restaurant located in the Northern Quarter on Oldham Street. Whilst Chef Diao’s dim sum appears simple, each dish has remarkable depth of flavour. The pork and prawn sui mai are as good as any in China, as expected from Diao’s 30 years of experience. Chef Diao’s chinese cuisine emphasises the integrity of colour, fragrance and taste in its food, all included in its all-inclusive menu catered your needs no matter how picky you are. Its warm and welcoming environment makes it family-friendly and a great place for a social hangout. A visit to Chef Diao’s will definitely satisfy your needs and give you an experience that will transport you to southern China!

Was recommended for their dim sum by many friends. It was our first visit here. Just because we spoke Cantonese to the staff, we were only offered menus in Chinese. FYI, not all Chinese speakers can read Chinese especially those like us British born. The dim sum menu in Chinese is pretty small and limited. Fried dough wrapped in rice noodle rolls (炸兩) = fried dough was crispy which we liked but the rice noodle roll was thick and mushy texture when it should be thin and silky. Fried turnip cake with XO Sauce (XO醬炒蘿蔔糕) = Fried turnip cake was like fried rice cake minus the turnip with very mild xo sauce flavour. Fried chive dumplings (煎韭菜餃) = this was ok but the execution of these dumplings weren't neat and were in different sizes. Siu mai (燒賣) = this one was ok too but again, each one was in different sizes. Chaozhou fun guo (潮州粉粿) = The filling was mushy apart from the water chestnut which is an unusual ingredient for this dumpling. The same problem with the execution. There was a huge one with thick skin compared to the other two. Steamed Beancurd Skin Rolls (鮮竹卷) = This was ok. The quality of the dim sum; for what we were there for, was average to under average. It felt like the chef who made these dim sum isn't a trained or fully trained 'dim sum master' (點心師父). Overall, a disappointing visit for dim sum.

Lovely restaurant. Our meals were amazing. Hot, fresh and absolutely delicious. The waiters also attend to you really quickly. For the quality of food, the price is very reasonable. I recommend.

A very authentic Cantonese restaurant with dishes that are difficult to find elsewhere. You can find some of the best "dishes of the day" written on the blackboard. The dim sum was also authentic. If you want a true taste of Cantonese cuisine, this is the place to go. But don't expect the western style Chinese food though, this is probably not the right place for that.

Passed by a few times before deciding to give it a try. Encountered Chef Diao in person, and that's when I found out he's an authentic Hakka. There aren't many places in the UK where you can find delicious Hakka cuisine, but this one is truly worth recommending. The dim sum is freshly made by the dim sum master, and the dishes each have their own unique flavors and are reasonably priced. I really enjoyed the overall dining experience and will definitely come back.

first visit (dinner/main menu) second visit (dimsum) we played it safe by primarily ordering the classics bc any dim sum spot has gotta get those right! on the whole, everything was good and met expectations but not necessarily wow. i would say the cripsy chow mein was particularly tasty tho bc it was a very generous portion and so flavourful. their xlb and cheung fun were too thick for my liking (still yet to find a good xlb in mcr) and their ham sui gok was basically empty so i probably won’t order those next time. their main menu dishes are their standouts but overall a hidden gem and def deserve more recognition!
